Innovation and Design in Engineering and Architecture (IDEA Building)
The downtown campus was recognized as having more potential then granted by the previous plan. A connection must be made between architecture and engineering faculties but also be created with the city of Halifax. The site location naturally allowed for interaction to occur, and the new proposal would emphasis this quality.
The concept is based upon the principles of hide and seek. A procession is recognized where the people of the city infiltrate and flow through the campus and inhabit the space within. The courtyard building is simply placed over top of this pathway, lifting to allow access down underneath. The center piece of the building becomes a void. A place where students and city dwellers collide. From the exterior the buildings program and main structural system are nondescript - becoming realized and understood as you pass freely into the courtyard.
